Interview: margø – In Between

Hi margø. Introduce yourselves please and tell us what’s been happening
over the past six months.

I’m a Canadian musician and songwriter creating alternative pop music under the artist name margø. Over the past six months I’ve been busy! I released a single titled “Someday” which made it onto Spotify’s New Music Friday playlist in November, I was a top 50 producer’s pick in the CBC Searchlight Competition, I made it to the semi-finals of the International Songwriting Competition, I filmed and released my debut music video for “In Between”, and recorded my debut EP! I’ve also written so much music, and I’m incredibly excited to share it with my listeners in the coming months!

Congratulations on your new single ‘In Between’. What was the
inspiration behind the song?

“In Between” was actually released in March of 2019, but I always felt like it deserved a music video. This song centres around the theme of self-worth, and I always wanted to add visuals to help tell the story of this song. I worked with filmmaker Michael B MacDonald to create this video, and he really brought the song to life. This song was inspired by the feeling of never being enough for someone – to the point where you feel like you’re constantly chasing their approval and affection. I wanted to write a song with a message of realizing that you ARE enough, and you deserve to never be taken for granted. I feel like the video did an amazing job of embodying that message!

Your music interweaves so many different styles and sounds. If you could collaborate with anyone in the world, who would it be and why?

This is a really hard question!! There are so many artists I would love to collaborate with. I think there are three artists at the top of my list – the first would be ODESZA. They’re incredible musicians, I think the cinematic approach they take to their music is amazing. I’ve listened to their last album front to back countless times and I don’t think I’ll ever get sick of it – I would be so honoured to collaborate with them on a song. I’d also love to collaborate with Bastille, I think Dan Smith has my most favourite voice in music right now (and probably forever). I’m such a fan of theirs, and I love their style of songwriting as well. I’d also love to collaborate with K.Flay – I think she’s an incredibly creative songwriter and musician and I’m such a big fan!

What’s been your favorite musical experience to date?

I was really excited to hit #1 on the Hype Machine charts with “In Between” last year, that was a really big milestone for me. I think my favourite experience, however, has been every time I release new music. The support I’ve been getting from blogs and my listeners means the world to me, it’s the best feeling to know that people are enjoying the music I’m releasing out into the world. I have such an immense gratitude for everyone who listens to and shares my music, it really makes everything feel worthwhile.

What have you got lined up for the rest of the year?

I’m excited to be releasing my debut EP “Solo” on May 15th! It includes music I’ve already released as well as some new songs – I’m so incredibly proud of the songs on this EP. After that I plan to keep releasing music throughout the year, and I’m hoping to release a couple more music videos as well!
