Interview: Lucy Dreams – Dreamland

How does it sound when Billy Corgan and Air enjoy Cigarettes After Sex in a Beach House? A tricky question, the answer might be found in our new song “Dreamland” (out June 18th), avantgarde for the album “Götterfunken”.

Hi Lucy Dreams, how are you today?

Silver salute, I’m fine thanks! How are you? So nice to be connected!

David) I’m doing really well, thank you

For those that haven’t heard of you yet, how would you best describe your sound and who have been your biggest influences so far?

We like to see it as euphoric dreampop. And the biggest influence was, is and will always be Lucy, the artificial band member we’re working with.

Do you remember what the first song was that made you want to start a career inmusic?

It must have been an inspirational piece of art, because it has kept me passionate about making music for more than ten years now, in different bands and projects, all of them interesting. But this time, with Lucy Dreams, I feel a next-level connection to music and the creative realm surrounding it.

You have just released your new single ‘Dreamland’. Can you tell us how that track came about?

Lucy’s impulses were very special here, the glittering synth in the verse is based on an old traditional Viennese melody Lucy was fed with. Also, the 4-note-melody before the chorus was Lucy’s idea, just as the sound of the guitars that are very similar to the ones in the „Twin Peaks“ theme. Based on this input we have composed the instrumental for Dreamland. Then, on a starry night during lockdown, I was alone in my apartment and had a colourful drink. I went for a walk and looked at the sky more than where I was headed. So I laid down, directed my body towards the stars, with the instrumental version of dreamland in my headphones…I wrote the lyrics for Dreamland.

And is there a story behind it?

Dreamland is a journey, destination and travel in unison. We came up with this lone traveller by the name of Mr. Mirandola, also the protagonist of the music video, who embarks on a seemingly eternal quest for meaning and comprehension. Left to his own devices, he is in search of a better world, and no multiverse, landscape, dreamscape or moloch is too outlandish for his quest. If he ever reaches his destinations, who is to say, it is quite likely that he already carries this better world within himself, as do we all.

Can we expect a new EP, or even an album from you in the near future?

Yes, and we couldn’t be more excited about it. The LP will be called „Götterfunken“ and will be released towards the end of 2021. The single now, „Dreamland“, is the avantgarde for Götterfunken, it’s a vanguard scout for the album to come, as it were.

The coronavirus outbreak has obviously affected everyone’s plans, but what have you got in store for the rest of the year?

We’re working on the album at the moment. I can’t reveal more, but the musical foundation walls we’re looking at already get me incredibly excited.

And finally, what is the best piece of musical advice you have ever been given?

Aim for the stars!
